elainemccrimmon@hotmail.co.uk |
British Beer & Pub Association
Elaine McCrimmon joined the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) in
2002 and was promoted to Senior Policy Advisor in 2004. The BBPA is the
trade association representing the interests of 98% of the UK’s brewing
industry and nearly two thirds of Britain’s 59,000 pubs. Her role is to
assist the Brewing Director (Dr David Long) in making representations on
behalf of Member Companies with a view to minimising constraints on the
production and distribution of beer and to avoid the establishment of
barriers to trade. Her key responsibilities include representing the UK
brewing industry on issues concerning beer duty collection, raw
materials, production, food safety and the environment in Whitehall and
Brussels. |
|
She established the Industry’s HACCP guide, which formed
the basis of the European guide in 2003.
Elaine started her career at Allied Distillers in
Dumbarton as an industrial placement student in 1997, re-joining the lab
team in 1999 following her graduation from Strathclyde University with a
degree in Applied Chemistry. It was here that her passion for the
industry grew. In 2000 she moved into the brewing sector joining the
Budweiser Stag Brewing Company in Mortlake.
Elaine has been a keen member of the IBD since 1999. She
is the IBD Global Co-ordinator of the Younger Members Network and a Member
of the Southern Section IBD Committee. She established the Younger Members
Network and is actively working towards securing funding for an
International Younger Member of the Year Award.
" I hope that the Younger Members Initiative will be a huge
success. The main focus of this activity is to enthuse and encourage
younger Members to become actively involved in the work of the IBD and
to ultimately assist with their personal development". |

Rachel Long

rachel.long@s-n.com |
John Smith’s Ltd, Scottish Courage
Rachel Long graduated from Oxford Brookes University with a degree in
Cell
and Molecular Biology in 2001. Studying for her dissertation under Dr
Katherine Smart cemented Rachel's desire to develop a career in the
brewing
industry. She then went on to complete her MSc in Brewing and Distilling
at
Heriot Watt University, graduating in 2002.
Rachel joined S&N UK as a graduate trainee early in 2003, working at the
company's Technical Centre in Edinburgh where she was involved in the
quality assurance, microbiology and sensory departments. |
|
After completing her training in S&N's sensory brand
portfolio, Rachel moved to Fountain Brewery to cover the role of Site
Flavour Co-ordinator. In January of 2004 Rachel moved to the John
Smith's Brewery in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire where she worked in a
variety of roles before taking up her latest role as Site Flavour
Co-ordinator.
Rachel is currently studying for the IBD Master Brewer examination, and
hopes to complete her first two exams next summer. At the recent Great
Northern Section AGM, Rachel was invited to join the Committee, as the
Young Persons' Representative for the Great Northern Section, where she
hopes to increase attendance at the many Section events and encourage
social
interaction between members.
"I have been given a great deal of guidance and advice from many members
of the IBD who have a vast amount of experience and knowledge. I feel
many of the younger IBD members who would like to develop a life-long
career in the brewing industry are intimidated by what they feel is an
"old boys" club of which they are not really members. As the GNS
representative I would love to encourage more interaction between
members and increased sharing of experiences."
Rachel lives with her partner Gavin Hock, who was formerly the
Examinations Administrator at the IBD, and spends her free time
renovating their new home, shopping and doing pub quizzes.

Iain Shuell

iainshuell@hotmail.com |
Ramsgate Brewery, Ramsgate, Kent
Iain Shuell is 31 years old and originates from Toronto, Canada. His first
introduction to the brewing industry was in Den Haag, in the Netherlands, while
on a student/work visa. He worked for one year at an Allied-Domeq brewpub where
he was trained in the dispense and production of cask ales and lagers. A year
later, Iain returned home intent on becoming a brewer. After 3 weeks of
badgering the brewmaster at his local brewery, he landed a position in the
packaging department. |
He spent 4 years with the Amsterdam Brewing
Company and made his way from packaging, to brew
house operations, cellar management, completed
his G.C.B.P. and finally worked in filtration.
During his time at 'The Amsterdam', Iain had the
honour of working with accomplished brewers from
China and Jamaica. They inspired him to apply
himself to his industry internationally.
For the last 2 years, Iain has been the Head
Brewer at the quietly growing Ramsgate Brewery
in Kent. The brewery has enjoyed success in
regional and national, S.I.B.A. brewing awards.
He is looking forward to the completion of their
new plant in April of this year, the initiation
of
the Younger Members Network in his region and
around the world. |

Emma
Glencross
BSc (Microbiology)

emma.glencross@lion-nathan.com.au |
Castlemaine Perkins Pty Ltd, Brisbane
After completing my degree I spent a year overseas then upon my return in
2001 I started work with Castlemaine Perkins in the Laboratory. I worked as a
Laboratory Technician and Microbiologist for two years. In 2004 I moved across
to brewing in a development Brewer role. In 2005 I became a Brewing Team Leader
and as of the beginning of 2006 I am combining my previous two roles by spending
3-4 months of the year as a relief Team Leader and the rest in the Brewer role.
I am currently studying towards my Diploma in Brewing qualification. |
|
I see the Younger Member Network as a great opportunity for young people,
particularly those new to the brewing industry, to gain new contacts and a
broader knowledge base in a shorter period of time then would have been
otherwise possible (and have a good time in the process). |
