Awards

This section of the IBD website lists the awards and prizes distributed to candidates for their outstanding examination achievements. 
Award Name Eligibility/Parameters Presentation/Prize Most Recent Recipient
Cambridge Prize Awarded every two years, to member under 35 years (in the year of application) for significant contribution to Brewing Science and Technology. Traditionally this award is presented at a relevant Section or Presidential Dinner. The winner receives a cheque for £500 and an engraved memento. 2003 - Catherine O'Shaughnessy
Horace Brown Award Awarded every three years - an eminent scientist award. Although this award is open all members, application is by selection not submission. The winner receives a suitable memento/gift and is invited to give a Horace Brown memorial lecture. 2005 - Lionel D Maule
Sir William Waters Butler Award Awarded to the best 3rd year student in Brewing & Distilling at ICBD Heriot Watt. The winner is given £150 worth of books, with IBD bookplates inside noting the year and name of winner. The award is presented at the Scottish Section annual dinner. 2006 - Mhairi McDonald
John S Ford Awarded to the highest distinction of Dipl.Brew. This award is open to all Dipl.Brew candidates. The Board of Examiners are responsible for selecting the winner, based on examination results. The winner receives £1000 and an engraved quaiche. Usually presented at a relevant Section dinner or convention. If based outside the UK, the winner receives three days subsistence and accommodation for three nights. However, candidates organise and pay for their own travel or request their company do so. 2007 - Sandra Nadine Egbertine Van Nierop
John S Hough Awarded to the highest distinction at M.Brew. This award is open all M.Brew candidates. The Board of Examiners are responsible for selecting the winner, based on examination results. The winner receives £1000 and an engraved quaiche. Usually presented at a relevant Section dinner or convention. If based outside the UK, the winner receives three days subsistence and accommodation for three nights. However, candidates organise and pay for their own travel or request their company do so. 2005 - Stephen Gilsenan
Worshipful Company of Brewers GCB This award is given to the candidate with the highest marks in the GCB. If the results are tied, then awarded to the candidates with least academic advantage. The Board of Examiners are responsible for selecting the winner, based on examination results. The winner receives a £500 cheque from the Worshipful Company of Brewers (WCB). In addition, they receive an engraved tankard with WCB crest on reverse. The award is presented at luncheon organised by WCB at Brewers' Hall. 2007 GCB:

Worshipful Company of Brewers GCP This award is given to the candidate with the highest marks in the GCP. If the results are tied, then awarded to the candidates with least academic advantage. The Board of Examiners are responsible for selecting the winner, based on examination results. The winner receives a £500 cheque from the Worshipful Company of Brewers (WCB). In addition, they receive an engraved tankard with WCB crest on reverse. The award is presented at luncheon organised by WCB at Brewers' Hall. 2007 GCP:

Scotch Whisky Association GCD This award is given to the candidate with the highest marks in GCD. If the results are tied, then awarded to the candidates with least academic advantage. The Board of Examiners are responsible for selecting the winner, based on examination results. The winner receives a £500 cheque from the Scottish Whisky Association (SWA). An engraved quaiche is supplied by the IBD/Scottish Section. The award is presented at the Scottish Section annual dinner. 2007 - Cathy Gilbert
Worshipful Company of Distillers Scholarship Award This award is open to all candidates taking the Dipl.Distil, and awarded to the candidate with the highest average marks completing all three modules (not necessarily in the same year). The Board of Examiners are responsible for selecting the winner, based on examination results.  The winner receives a £500 cheque from the Worshipful Company of Distillers (WCD). An engraved quaiche is supplied by the IBD/Scottish Section. The award is presented at the Scottish Section annual dinner. 2007 - Brendan McCrannon
Crisp Malting Award This award is open to all candidates sitting the Dipl.Brew Module 1. It is awarded to the best candidate based on examination results. The award consists of a cheque for £250, plus a shield/plaque donated and organised by Crisp Malt. The award is presented at an evening meal kindly organised by Crisps Maltings. 2007 - Julia Brooke Atchison
Brewing Engineers Association This award is open all candidates sitting the Dipl.Brew Module 3. It is awarded to the best candidate based on examination results. The award winner is presented with a cheque for £500. The Brewing Engineers Association (BEA) kindly fund the winners attendance at a BEA dinner plus overnight accommodation. 2007 - Scott Stokes
Younger Members Award This annual award is open to IBD Young Members by application. The award winner is sponsored to attend an IBD convention or IBD global training course. 2007 - Michaela Miedl
Gin & Vodka Association Award This award is open to all candidates sitting the Dipl.Distil Module 2.  It is awarded to the best candidate based on examination results. The award winner is presented with a cheque for £500 from the Gin & Vodka Association along with an engraved quaiche. The award is presented at an evening dinner.
