The Diploma in Packaging Qualification - New Syllabus

The IBD Diploma in Packaging qualification has now been established for 4 years. This year, following feedback from candidates and requests from several companies, the Board of Examiners has reviewed the syllabus content and format of this qualification for new candidates registering for 2012 examination.

Essentially, the content has not been changed significantly, but the review has constituted, principally, a re-formatting of the basic units within the 3 modules, with the aim of providing a more equal balance of knowledge requirements.

The units within the 3 modules have been re-organized as follows:

ModuleUnit No.Unit Titles
M11.1Packaging Theory and Materials
M11.2Beer Preparation for Packaging
M11.3Planning and Line Design
M11.4Small Pack Operations
M22.1Quality
M22.2Operations Management
M2Either
2.3
Or 2.4

Large Pack Operations - Keg
Large Pack Operations - Cask
M2Either
2.5
Or 2.6
Brewing

Carbonated Soft Drinks
M33.1Resource Management
M33.2Fluid Mechanics
M33.3Heat Transfer
M33.4Process Control

The most significant additions are the inclusion of new units in Module 2:

- "Operations Management", which requires knowledge of basic line management principles (such as finance and purchasing), plus World Class Manufacturing principles.

- A new, optional, unit on the production and packaging of "Carbonated Soft Drinks"

The examination format is not changing; each unit is examined by assignment and two written exams to be completed in 1 hour.

Candidates already registered for the existing syllabus will be able to complete the programme, since the IBD will run exams for the 2 syllabus structures in parallel for the next 2 years.
Registration for new candidates will be on to Module 1 of the new syllabus, with module 2 being available for examination from 2013.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) will still apply, where relevant, to certain units; full details are included in the new syllabus document.
