The Diploma in Brewing is an important qualification in it's own right, as well as representing the necessary thorough grounding for an application to the Master Brewer Exam. The examination is a measure of the candidate's theoretical knowledge of Brewing Science & Technology. The objective of the Diploma in Brewing is to give international recognition of comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the principles of Brewing Science & Technology.

Typical Diploma in Brewing candidates are team leaders, operational managers and technicians. They take the Diploma in Brewing either as a stepping-stone to the Master Brewer qualification (M.Brew) or as an end in itself. The Diploma in Brewing has City & Guilds accreditation at Level 4 of the National Qualifications Framework in the UK (or equivalent internationally) recognised standards. The exam is split into three modules, which can be sat in any order and combination.

Module 1: Materials and Wort
Module 2: Yeast and Beer
Module 3a: Packaging Technology*
Module 3b: Process Technology*
*Modules 3a and 3b are sat together and form one examination paper

Each question paper is three hours in duration, and requires essay-style answers. Modularisation of the syllabus is designed to allow for a wide range of candidate's specific backgrounds, whereas those with appropriate science degrees might choose to take all three exams within a year of commencing study, the syllabus is equally applicable to those with appropriate work experience, who have the opportunity to tackle the work load over a period of time.

Pass mark for all modules = 45%

NB. For Dipl. Brew. Module 3, candidates must achieve a minimum standard of 35% in both Section A - Packaging Technology and in Section B - Process Technology. This means that in order to achieve the pass mark of 45% overall for Module 3, attaining 35% in either section requires a mark of at least 55% in the other section. Failure to achieve the minimum standards means the overall mark will be graded at E (or less, depending on total percentage attained).
