The University of Nottingham (UoN) invites applications for a Research and Development Scientist to join our exciting collaboration with Murphy & Son. The Company are a long established provider of brewing supplies and technical expertise to the brewing and broader beverage industry.
You will be based at their Basford, Nottingham site.
As an ambitious individual, this is an exciting opportunity for you to carry out a high profile Knowledge Transfer Partnership project. You will have a unique opportunity to lead the delivery of a strategic project to develop innovative antioxidant solutions to improve beer stability, looking to improve quality and shelf-life for brewers.
In partnership with academic experts from the School of Biosciences, you will work with a variety of stakeholders to ensure that the methodologies implemented are aligned with Murphy & Son’s client needs.
A science-based approach to R&D in the following areas will be required:
- The design and implementation of pilot plant and commercial scale trials.
- Application and development of relevant methods to determine beer stability through shelf-life.
- Flavour assessment of beer to assess the impact of ageing.
- Use of electron spin resonance spectroscopy to measure the oxidative stability of wort and beer samples.
- Use of techniques to evaluate the crossflow filterability of beers.
- Development of new products from novel sustainable sources.
Customer liaison is a key requisite and part of this process will involve presenting directly to customers and attending trade shows and conferences. The writing of publications and technical papers to enhance Murphy & Son’s profile will be required.
As a people-orientated individual, you will have the ability to build relationships, influence, and engage collaboratively between the teams at Murphy & Son and the UoN and their wide customer base. You should hold a BSc/MSc in a relevant subject and a PhD (or close to completion) in Brewing Science or another discipline where the research was focused on brewing. Previous experience in a related role within industry, scientific or research environment is highly desirable.
This exciting opportunity is funded through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP). KTP is a UK Government scheme promoting sustained and mutually beneficial relationships between universities and industry.
Through the KTP, you will be fully supported by the university and mentored to nurture your talent. You will have your own budget (£5,000 pa) for training and CPD, helping you develop your skillset and reach your personal/professional career goals.
This is a full time, fixed term contract for 30 months.
