IBD Board Trustee

David Smith

David brings to the IBD Board a wealth of experience in the brewing industry, especially in the craft sector, and a clear focus on Manufacture, Food & Beverage, Business Planning, and Quality Assurance. He is fully committed to supporting the strategic mission to be the global body providing the most respected and widely recognised technical qualifications in brewing and distilling.

David has been an IBD Trustee since 2018 and an IBD Member since 1976. He became a Section Committee member in 1988, serving for the Yorkshire and North-East Section then Great Northern Section as Secretary, Treasurer, Vice Chairman and twice as Section Chairman. As Chairman of the IOB Yorkshire and North-East Section, he helped guide through the amalgamation of the IBD and Incorporated Brewers Guild and with four other Sections (IOB, IBG) helped establish the IBD Great Northern Section.

David started his career at Sam Smith’s Old Brewery where he worked for seven years as a production shift brewer and five years in Quality Assurance. In 1988, he decided to set up his own company, Brewing Services Ltd, based in York, to provide technical assistance, quality assurance services and training to the ever-increasing numbers of craft brewers. To date, he has worked with over 200 breweries, providing many brewers with technical assistance whilst starting up and becoming established; an essential part of which is ensuring their legal compliances, on the job training and becoming members of the IBD.

Among the brewing organisations that David has been part of is The Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) where he was a Council Member and Trustee. At SIBA, David became their first Technical Director and introduced their Manual of Good Brewing Practice to help improve quality standards in UK craft brewing. David also helped to organise Beeranomics 2013, an international conference in collaboration with York University School of Management.

Born in Leeds (Yorkshire) and holder of a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry from the University of Essex, David obtained the IBD Diploma in Brewing. He was elected an IBD Fellow in 2000 and became a Life Member of the IBD in 2016.

In his free time, David likes to spend time with an ever-expanding number of grandchildren and, as a Parish Councillor, is involved in numerous community activities.
