Carlsberg Malawi Brewery was established in Malawi on 14 December 1968 so last December marked forty years of operations. Carlsberg Malawi was the first Carlsberg Brewery to be established outside Denmark and it is the only Carlsberg brewing company in Africa, situated at the Makata heavy industrial site in Blantyre.

Since its inception in January 1997 all the beer brewed at Drayman’s micro brewery has been handmashed only by myself in the same tiny 600-litre mash tun. I choose to do mashing, wort collection and wort kettle operations entirely on my own because of the close relationship I have with the beer I brew.

In the context of a city drastically short of water, the project will see the brewery reusing 65% of its wastewater for non-process activities. This effective recovery of water will demonstrate the brewery’s serious commitment to reducing the environmental footprint of its operation.

Zambian Breweries was established as Northern Breweries in Ndola on the Zambian Copperbelt in 1952. Like its present parent company, SABMiller, the Zambian Breweries Group traces its origins back to the noble ideal of satisfying the thirst of miners. The company was established in Ndola during the heady days of the mining boom on the Copperbelt in the early 1950s.
