Adnams has long been renowned for its excellent ales and the quality of wines that the company supplies, but the completion of the total renewal of the Sole Bay Brewery in 2008 and the burgeoning ‘micro-distilling’ scene in the US, prompted Chairman Jonathan Adnams to consider fulfilling his long-held dream of adding high quality, artisanally-produced, distilled beverages to the company’s portfolio.

Melbourne in March - The 32ndAsia Pacific section convention

The 32nd Asia Pacific section convention was held in Melbourne at the end of March. This time the organisers did not have to resort to including the suppliers in with the delegates to boost apparent numbers and a total of 470 people set off for an evening of organised mayhem called a pub crawl!

Microbiological methods … and the challenge of the modern brewing process

Louis Pasteur in his seminal Études sur la bière, first made available to English speakers in 1879, pointed out that whilst in wine making spontaneous fermentation produced a satisfactory outcome this was not so in the case of the conversion of wort into beer. He concluded that failure to pitch wort with a healthy dose of a culture of a suitable yeast would inevitably lead to the formation of “an acid or putrid liquid resulting from the production and multiplication of alien ferments”.

Burton on Trent remains at the heart of British brewing tradition. Once famed for its pale ales, Britain’s biggest brewery, the 8mhl Molson Coors plant in the town produces much more bottom-fermented lager than top-fermented ale these days. With an allchilled and filtered output, it uses a lot of process gas and one of the UK’s largest and most modern carbon dioxide recovery plants was installed by Pentair in 2010 with a 24/7 capacity of 2,000 kg/h CO2.
