A growing craft brewery in Western Australia

Cowaramup Brewing Company is located in the southwest region of Western Australia some 250km south of Perth near the famous Margaret River wine area. The brewery began operations in December 2006 after five years of planning and numerous delays due to state and local government red tape.

The recent discovery of the ornate tomb of Khonso Im-Heb, who was head of granaries and beer-brewing for the worship of the Egyptian mother goddess, Mut reminds us that brewing is an ancient art. Khonso poured hot water on to milled grains over 3300 years ago.

Grappa from Italy

According to the EC regulations, grappa is the spirituous beverage produced in Italy exclusively from grape marc. A quantity of lees may be added to the grape marc that does not exceed 25kg of lees per 100kg of grape or contribute more than 35%of the total quantity of alcohol in the finished product. The distillation is carried out in the presence of the marc itself at less than 86%ABV and the minimum alcoholic strength in bottle is 37.5%.

Strengthening Speight’s

Brewing was one of the first enterprises to appear in the new colony of New Zealand in the mid to late 1800s. Messrs McKinnon and Wickins established Otago’s first brewery in 1856. With the discovery of gold in the 1860s, it wasn’t long before more breweries sprang up to service the thirsty miners. Other breweries included the Dunedin Brewery, Water of Leith Brewery, Red Lion Brewery, Strachan’s Victoria Brewery, J Speight & Co and the Well Park Brewery.
