Craft distilling in Seattle

Birthplace of Bill Gates, Starbuck’s coffee and grunge music, home to Dr Frasier Crane, the Seahawks and the Mariners, Seattle is the largest city in both the State of Washington and the Pacific Northwest region of North America and, as of July 2014, is the fastest-growing major city in the United States. The Seattle metropolitan area of around 3.6 million inhabitants is the 15th largest metropolitan area in the United States.

Brewers in Beervana - Over 11,500 attendees gathered in Portland for the Craft Brewers Conference

Portland is home to almost 60 breweries – apparently, more than any other city on earth (unless someone can tell us otherwise!). Since the early 1980s Portland brewers have been pioneers of the US craft beer movement and with plenty of local raw materials from the nearby Willamette Valley and a good local source of water, their innovative beers have helped the city to earn its ‘Beervana’ nickname.

Reflections on conveying

The effi cient and gentle conveying of grain and malt is an important aspect of routine operation for many maltsters and distillers, but it presents a unique set of challenges. Bill Lewis, Sales Proposal Engineer at Guttridge Ltd, assesses the conveyor designs available to meet requirements for both wet and dry material transport to support the malting process. A key focus is the use of en-masse conveyors which are often selected for use in distilleries.
