These days many UK brewers use hops imaginatively. The names of Roger Ryman at St Austell, Mike Powell Evans at Adnams, Sean Franklin at Roosters and Graham Trott at Triple fff immediately spring to mind but I do not think anyone uses quite so many of them as John Bryan at Oakham Ales. There are copper hops, late hops, very late hops, hop back hops, a hop tea and even pillow cases full of them stuffed into a hop torpedo in the maturation tanks. Hop rates up to 2kg per barrel, mainly on the aroma side, are not unknown and all his beers have a pleasant bitter twang as well.

Plastic containers and closures have taken on an important role as packaging materials for the brewing industry. The first German brewers who worked with PET bottles were famous brand owners like Bitburger Brauerei which introduced the big neck bottle and in Berlin, Berliner Pilsener brought out a PET bottle as an event package for a big music festival that attracts yearly more than one million people each year. One of the early reasons for this was the safety issue of missiles being thrown around by ebullient party goers.

The Trumer Brauerei is located in the university city of Berkeley just over the Bay Bridge from San Francisco. You can see the ivory towers of California’s oldest university (1866) from the roof of the brewery and despite being off Camellia Street its surroundings are mainly industrial.
